School of the Year 2019/2020
“ All progress takes place outside the comfort zone.”
- Michael John Bobak
Dear Parents/Care Givers,
Welcome back to school for 2021, everyone.
A special welcome to all new parents in 2021. We hope that your time at the school is a happy and joyous one. We are a partnership in the education of your children and we share that special responsibility seriously and with great respect for you as the first educators of your children. Work with us in developing your children into what your expectations are for them.
We apologize for the delay in starting but that is our world at the moment. COVID is not going to go away anytime soon. Please be assured that we are vigilant in our health and safety processes for COVID and our cleaning regimes are in place for 2021 as for COVID in 2020 (except the cleaning of play equipment). Classrooms are COVID friendly with hand sanitizing and cleaning regular processes each day. Thank you for wearing masks and maintaining healthy habits with your children.
The children have been absolutely amazing these first few days – working hard and playing beautifully together is a regular habit with our children. We are so proud of them.
The Caladenia community welcomes the following new staff for 2021. We wish them the best professional year – we are sure that they will learn much, contribute plenty and share the joy we all have in working at this school.
Ms O’Malley (PP support and other support)
Ms. Lincoln (English support and Team support)
Ms. Munro (Yr 1 teacher)
Ms. Manuel (Team Leader and class teacher Yr 2) – Level 3 Teacher
Ms. Craigie (Yr 2 teacher/tandem with Ms Sandy Wingfield) – 4 days/week
Ms. Avery (Yr 5 teacher)
Mr. Garrett (Yr 6 teacher)
Welcome back from Parental Leave to Ms. Redhead and into Year 1 tandem teaching with Ms Catherall. We welcome Ms Rees back from Parental Leave to a full-time support teacher position in 2021.
All Deputies, the MCS and the Principal have been working solidly during holidays and weekends at school to ensure staff and students have everything necessary for this unusual start to the year (again). A huge thanks you to all of them for their commitment to your school.
We wish all staff a fantastic year.
Thank you all for the wonderful start to the year from Kindy to Year 6. Your cooperation and sensibilities in bringing your children to the classrooms was amazing and all the teachers were very grateful to you as they could do their job really well with that assistance. Parents are choosing this school over others because of the values and successes we achieve each year for years now and that is why our school enrolment continues to grow when other Canning Vale schools are declining in numbers.
This is a great school in which to learn, play and grow. To maintain this culture of calm, nurturing, respect and care for each other, we focus on all the little things that make a big difference in making our school culture what it is. Manners, dress standards (including hair styles and jewelry), social protocols and all the niceties that make life for others more pleasant, are important characteristics of what our children learn at Caladenia and are lauded by high schools for these characteristics each year.
These standards should not be interpreted as “old world” social values as they are used in all companies and communities which value very high standards in their outcomes, be they social or professional. What may appear to be consistently high standards does not translate to child boredom or dislike. Our children are consistently showing us that they are keen, eager to learn and well-mannered people who can self-regulate.
We practice these skills at school each day. Respect, integrity, honesty and kindness to all is our mantra which we live by at Caladenia. We try to live up to it every day.
Being selected by an independent panel of experts as School of the Year 2019/2020 reflects our growth as a school in our academic and social growth – the Panel discussed issues with parents, children and staff in order to reflect a completely balanced approach to selection of over 400 schools.
I am proud of our staff growth and child development at Caladenia. I look forward to coming to school every day as do our children, stating often that “we like coming back to school because we have so much fun in our learning and playing”. Our children love our school – it is special for them and for us. Our Public School Review (carried out by Directors of the Education Dept) confirmed our status as the best in their Report to our community.
When arriving inside the gates of the school, every student is asked to move straight to their classrooms for entry at 8.15am. Please ask your children to sit down outside their room quietly for the teacher to let them in – do not allow them to run around playing nor go onto play equipment as there are no teachers on duty in the mornings. It is dangerous for children to run while smaller children are around at this time and could be hurt. Thank you for your help.
Please be on time to pick up your children after school. We cannot guarantee that someone will be in the office if we are in staff meetings or staff leaving for other appointments early. We cannot guarantee student safety if your children are left to wait, sometimes, for more than an hour after school. We do have an after school care centre at Caladenia – please ring them to look after your children is you are going to be late at all. You can call Helping Hands and their mobile number is 0448 025 638.
Parking and Traffic
Our school has undertaken an agreement with the Your Move Program (our School Champion is Ms Wall and she is very actively pursuing this Program with teachers and students) and in 2021 we will be providing children and parents with opportunities to value walking/riding to school instead of car travel. This hopefully may reduce traffic congestion around the school. Along with additional Kiss n Drive bays, angled parking suggestions for development this year and a partnership arrangement with the City of Gosnells to develop a clear strategy for future traffic flow, we are hopeful of some relief with this issue.
Meanwhile, please be patient and observe the Parking Around Schools (City of Gosnells flyer) statement attached to this Newsletter.
Thank you for your cooperation with this serious matter – we hope that there will never be an accident involving children around our school. Be safe.

Pre Primary Room 1 – Mrs Harper
In Pre-Primary this week we having been spending time together, getting to know each other. We learnt how to draw people and completed a self-portrait. I am super proud of how they all turned out. What a great start to the year!
Your Move is a free program helping students get active by increasing walking, scooting and riding to school. Travel behaviour change experts work with Your Move Champions to tackle traffic issues and help provide practical ways to teach & develop sustainability at our school.
As part of our ‘Your Move’ program, we are including an incursion with RAC Road safety for students Pre-Primary to Year 6 during this term. Students will participate in a workshop that allows them to learn about skills relevant to their age group, such as: crossing the road safely, being a pedestrian, riding their bike and exploring the rules around road safety. These workshops will give our students the important life skills and understanding of how to move safely around our community. We are hoping that, by being a part of the incursion, students will begin to walk, ride or scoot to safely school.
National Ride to School day is March 19th
- Nicolle Wall, Your Move School Champion
