From the Principal’s Desk
Dear Parents and Care Givers,
It is nearing swimming lesson time and we know it is a cold time of the year but it is a part of our normal Physical Education Program and provides our students with the skills necessary to save themselves form swimming pool dangers and our many coastal beach fun spots. They also assist our students to be active and improve fitness while swimming in heated pools.
In 2018, we look like having our lessons during Terms 1 and 4, when it is hot weather. Unfortunately, we can’t be guaranteed of the same schedules for 2019 or beyond.
Holidaying During School Terms
The law is very clear when it comes to students missing school time. It states that students must attend 100% of the instructional time of the whole year. The letters sent out to you for missing school without a reasonable excuse cannot be withdrawn. The only time students can miss school is with a doctor’s certificate for an extended illness or injury.
While we all understand that sometimes it is difficult to take holidays in some workplaces in school holidays, the law still applies because students missing very crucial concepts in Mathematics, English, Science and other learning areas, find it particularly difficult to “catch up” as the students have moved on and onto various other concepts that have built on that one that was missed. It equates to some students having an unhappy and difficult classroom experience through missing school. At Caladenia, far too many students are taking during term holidays and we cannot set homework for all of them and mark it and then catch these students up – it is not possible. Please take holidays during school vacation times. Thank you.
Yesterday we were involved in the Winter Carnival. Our Senior Footy Team won all five games and took out the First Place Trophy for footy for the first time ever. Well done. Equally well done was the Senior Netball Team who also brought home the First Place Trophy – great work, girls. We are proud of all of our Teams in the Carnival for trying hard in every game they played and did so with wonderful sportsmanship towards the other teams. I am very proud of all of you.
Thanks to the coaches and organizers on the day – it was a terrific Carnival.
We wish you a very happy LONG WEEKEND for WA Day.

Kindy Mother’s Day Morning Tea
During week four the Kindy students enjoyed having their Mums, aunts or grandmothers attend a special Mother’s Day afternoon. The children entertained their families with some songs then they worked together to complete some fun activities. These included painting mums’ nails, drawing pictures of each other, a photo booth, pasta necklaces and painting hand print flowers. A fabulous afternoon was had by all. Thank you so much for attending!
Getting to Know our School Board Members
This newsletter Suma Rajkumar, (Parent Representative) has outlined her reasons for becoming a member of the School Board.
“Hi! I am Suma
I have been a member of the school community since 2011. I have been on the Caladenia School board for the last 2 years. My only child is now in Year 5, being well prepared to face the challenges of high school in 2 years by the dedicated teachers and principals of Caladenia. I work as a Senior Occupational Therapist in the areas of psychosocial rehabilitation. Like most parents who have been educated outside Australia, I too have been there feeling very puzzled by the Australian education system and likewise the system at Caladenia. Being a school board member has enhanced my understanding of why Caladenia operates in the way it does. I have realised the challenges faced by the hardworking academic and non-academic staff members whose primary focus is to achieve the best they can for our children. Often, we do not understand why things are done the way it is. Please speak to one of us on the school board if you have a suggestion or you are able to support the school activities. I look forward to all of us working as one community with one goal – the best for our children. Wishing the school community a very happy 10 years anniversary!!
