Dear Caladenia Community,
We are now into the second half of the term, our final 4 weeks of the year.
As the year winds down, we are, as always, continuing to celebrate achievement and success with our students. Today, I had the pleasure to attend my first junior assembly. As always, student behaviour was exemplary and the singing was most enjoyable.
I am currently working on our workforce plan and confirming the school’s staffing levels and requirements. Class allocations are then, my next priority, ensuring we have appropriate teacher allocations in all year levels.
Moving forward we are busy planning and finalising Year 6 Graduation, Graduation Lunch and Year 6 Day Camp (2 Days). It will be a special time for our Year 6 students as they “Graduate” and “Transition” to the next stage of their learning journeys.

Year 1 Room 10 – Miss Jacobsen
This term in Room 10, we have been learning about Australian states and territories and their famous landmarks! We have learned that Australia has six states and two territories. We followed Hush and Grandma Poss on their journey around Australia to find a way to make Hush visible in Possum Magic and learned about the state capitals. We have also learned some interesting facts. ·Western Australia is the biggest state in Australia. ·Uluru is found in the Northern Territory. ·Queensland is home to Great Barrier Reef and amazing sea creatures. ·New South Wales and Victoria couldn’t agree on who should have the capital, so the Australian Capital Territory was formed. ·Tasmania is separated from mainland Australia by the Bass Strait. ·The Great Australian Bight stretches across Western Australia and South Australia.
Year 4 Room 20 – Mrs Devenish-Krauth
This term, Room 20’s Year Four students have been diving into the fascinating world of forces in Science lessons. This week, through hands-on activities, we’ve learned how friction affects the movement of objects in our daily lives. We have been experimenting with various surfaces, discovering how different materials can either increase or decrease friction.
One of the highlights of our investigation was an exciting game of tug-o-war, followed by a second game where students donned gloves coated with soap! This fun experiment allowed them to directly experience how friction can change the outcome of a competition. As they pulled against each other, they quickly learned that the slippery gloves significantly reduced friction, making it more challenging to hold on. This hands-on activity not only brought the concept of friction to life but also fostered teamwork and problem-solving skills. We can’t wait to see what our young scientists discover next.
Year 1 Room 30 – Miss Williams
The students of Room 30 have been busy learning how to recognise and describe the features of Australian coins and order them according to their value. We played a fun game called ‘Show Me the Money’. Students had three guesses to solve the hidden coin under the flap!
In Geography, we have been studying ‘The World Around Us’. We have been writing and drawing the features of our suburb and city on small maps. Then we identified the States and capital cities of Australia and their major landmarks. Possum Magic even made a special appearance taking us on a magical journey around our beautiful country eating yummy Australian food!
On the 11th of November, Room 30 commemorated Remembrance Day by painting poppies and displaying them proudly on our classroom door.

Dear Caladenia Community,
Term 3 was a busy Term with excursions, debates, Faction Captain elections. We began with NAIDOC week and finished with swimming and RUOK Day.
I take this opportunity to acknowledge the amazing work that all staff at Caladenia Primary School do, every week, every day in every classroom, for every student.
I also take this opportunity to introduce myself to you. I am Paul Bottcher and will be Principal at Caladenia PS until 29 January 2025, whilst Mr Nastasi is on leave.
Coming to Caladenia PS from retirement is exciting as it is my first experience in a Primary School. I have an extensive career as a school administrator since 1992 and have worked in public education since 1984. My last school was a five week “stint” as Principal at Katanning SHS and prior to that I was Principal at CVC from January 2018.
I am excited to be here in an “exemplary” school and a Centre for Excellence. Week 1 saw us having an amazing Athletics Carnival and I must acknowledge all involved in the organisation, set up, running of the day, delivering lunches and Boost Juices along with all the other essential roles involved in a fantastic day. Parental support on days like this make schools a great place for our students and staff.
I look forward to meeting you throughout the rest of Term 4. It is an exciting time and opportunity to celebrate student achievement all the great things we do in our school.

2024 Athletics Carnival
What a fantastic two days of competition at our Primary School Athletics Carnival! The team games were full of energy and teamwork, and the track events showcased some incredible speed and endurance. We were so impressed by the sportsmanship and competitive spirit displayed by all factions. Congratulations to Green faction for taking out first place, followed by Red in second, Gold in third, and Blue in fourth. Well done to all the individual award winners who displayed great athleticism across the events. A huge thank you to the staff, students, and parents for all their support in making this event a success. We look forward to the Interschool Carnival at Ranford Primary in Week 4, on Wednesday 31st of October and Friday 1st of November.

Pre Primary Room 6 – Mrs Haug
This term in Pre-Primary we are learning about Australian animals. We will be learning about where they live, what they look like and other interesting facts. This will be integrated into our literacy and science programmes. This week we went to Caversham Wildlife park to visit the animals and learn about them first hand. Here are some photos from our excursion.
Year 2 Room 36 – Mrs Hemelaar and Mrs Stevens
There have been a lot of fun, games and activities to keep us busy in Room 36. End of Term 3 had us getting wet with swimming lessons. We all enjoyed this even though the weather was cold and blustery for weeks 7 and 8.
In English we used descriptive language to create a Cinquain Poem about an element in nature. We worked together to brainstorm some strong adjectives, verbs to describe the movement, words to describe how it made us feel and synonyms for the chosen element. Our collaboration sparked some creative ideas. Finally, we created our own exciting Cinquain poem.
In Mathematics we have been learning about fractions. The denominator is the number on the bottom which represents the entire collection required to equal a whole. While the number on the top, the numerator, represents how many parts are remaining. The students were very enthusiastic about creating Fraction Robots. We are excited to see what new activities and learning adventures wait us in Term 4.

Dear Parents/Caregivers,
This term has certainly been busy!
As the term comes to a close, it is good to look back and see what we have accomplished. We started the term with NAIDOC Week and the assembly, the Yr 4 AQWA Excursion, the Yr 5 Scitech Excursion, the MAC class Pawsey Research Centre Excursion as well as the MAC Great Debate, the well-loved Book Parades and Book Fair, our Parent Open Night, the Science and Technology Week, our Student Executive visit to Parliament House, Student Elections for 2025, the P&C Fathers’ Day Stalls, our Choir’s inclusion in One Big Voice, the Interschool Cross Country, the Kindy Farm Incursion, R U Okay? Day and finishing off with swimming lessons. We hope you have enjoyed them all and thank our P&C as well as our staff for all their planning and assistance in organising and running these events.
As I’m sure you know, the school holidays start this afternoon and the school will be unattended from Monday, 23 September until we come back to school on Monday, 7 October. We hope you all have a lovely break and enjoy some time together. We have included some community events in the newsletter that you may be interested in attending – they are free, though you may need to book. Once again, we are asking our local community members to keep a watch over our school during the holiday period. If you see or hear anything unusual at the school, can you please call the Police or School Watch Security. The Police can be contacted on 13 14 44 and School Watch can be contacted on 1800 177 777 (free call).
Next term we will start the first week with the School Athletics Carnival. The jumps and throws are organised for Tuesday, 8 October and the whole School Carnival with the other events will be on Friday, 11 October. The Pre-Primary students will have their events in the Kindy and Pre-Primary play area at 11am, so if you have children in Pre-Primary please go down and watch their events. Our teaching and sports staff have been working hard in organising the events and placed posters around the school with a Q-Code outlining the programs for both days. The P&C have organised for a coffee van and are trying to get volunteers to assist in delivering Boost Juice drinks to the children in the bays, so if you can help out, we would really appreciate it.
We hope that parents and families are able to come and enjoy the day with us.
Please remember that we have a Staff Development Day organised for Week 3 Friday, 25 October – so the students do not come to school on that day. Our staff will be involved in Professional Learning as well as reviewing our results and planning.
We hope that you all have a great break, and we look forward to seeing you all next term!
Kind regards,
Paula Asplin

R U OK? Day
Caladenia embraced R U Okay? Day in conjunction with the Blue Tree Project on Thursday 12 September. Both of these organisations promote the encouragement of people speaking up when they are experiencing mental health concerns and build trust to normalise having meaningful conversations about how they are.
We were able to find a tree in the Kindy and PP area, which needed a ‘blue lease on life’ and painted it blue as a regular reminder to all about the importance of reaching out. We also provided all our students and teachers with an R U OK? Wristband and staff and students all wore blue to promote being aware of others’ wellbeing.
Please remember to contact Lifeline for support if you or anyone you know is experiencing a personal crisis on 13 11 14.

Pre Primary Room 4 – Mrs Hemingway
This term in PP2, Room 4, we have been learning about Fairy Tales. We have enjoyed reading lots of different stories with some of our favourites being Jack and the Beanstalk, The Three Little Pigs and The Three Billy Goats Gruff. We have been discovering all about the characters and different settings in these stories as well as identifying the problem and solution in each one. It has been fun to complete different activities like designing a bridge for The Three Billy Goats Gruff, sequencing pictures from the story, writing lists for Little Red Riding Hood and retelling the stories in our own words.
Year 2 Room 22 – Miss Chan
In Year 2 Room 22, students explored 2D shapes and their properties in an exciting and collaborative way! They quizzed each other using the Quiz-Quiz-Trade method to reinforce their understanding of various shapes and their attributes. The class also got creative by making compound shapes using basic 2D shapes and combining them to form new designs. To top it off, they went on a shape hunt around the classroom, spotting different shapes used in everyday objects. Finally, the students showcased their knowledge by creating posters that highlighted the properties of 2D shapes.
Year 5 Room 23 – Miss Mc Allister
In the final week of Term Three, there’s no rest for the busy bees in Room 23! Students have been hard at work on their final display copies of biographies about famous scientists. We have got a range from Isaac Newton to Marie Curie!
In Mathematics this week, we dove into the world of averages—mean, median, mode, and range! We took our learning outside and measured the distance of T-Ball throws within our faction groups. It was like the Olympics! After measuring the throws with trundle wheels and recording the data, students worked together to work out all four types of averages. The results were in: Red Faction came in 4th place with a mean of 26.4m, Gold Faction snagged 3rd with a mean of 28.1m, Green Faction took 2nd place with a mean of 30m, and Blue Faction triumphed with a whopping mean average of 35.6m!
As swimming lessons come to an end, it’s been fantastic to see the students splashing around and developing their swimming skills.
Keep up the great work, everyone and enjoy your holidays!

Dear Parents/Care Givers,
Thank You
- The Fathers’ Day Stalls have been a big success this year with many students accessing some wonderful presents for their dads for Fathers’ Day this Sunday.
We wish all dads/granddads a happy and joyous day on Sunday. - Well done Lucas and Revva (Caladenia students) for successes in ice skating and Jiu-Jitsu respectively. That is a huge achievement – you must be very proud of yourselves as we are at Caladenia.
- Thank you to all the Cross Country Caladenia competitors for your tremendous efforts – you not only performed admirably but also represented our school with the best sportsmanship – we are so proud of you in representing Caladenia.
- The Year 5 students again showed their dedication to our school in wanting to be Student Executive for 2025. All students who wished to be considered for voting presented speeches for their inclusion to the process – each class voted on their representatives for Student Exec and went forward to the school-wide voting after speeches were repeated. The student body voted and the results will be published next term with the Captains and Vice Captains for 2025.
Well done to everyone who entered the election process. The speeches were delightful and appropriate to our Caladenia quality standards. Thank you. - Our massively large choir represented the school at the One Big Voice event at the RAC Arena on 22 August. Three of our students were selected from the 2000 strong students to be the comperes and perform solos. We are very proud of you as a whole performing group. Thank you. Ms Connolly, Ms Rivett and Mr Frost are the most amazing music teachers and, together, they are making a huge difference in the production of quality instrumental and choral music in our school.Thank you.
- We are well on the way to training our new Intern Schools in teaching excellence and I thank our Mentor Teams for their quality commitment to Public School Education in WA.
Term 3
- Protective Behaviours – Caladenia carried out training in this area for staff on 8 August. Staff are aware through these sessions and their own training online (Dept Training), the importance and significance of student knowledge and strategies for difficult situations.
- On Monday 2 Sept (next week), there is no school for students. This day has been set aside for Professional Learning for staff. It is a full day’s session by one of the gurus of Explicit Instruction in Australia – John Fleming is from Melbourne and believes our school is one of the best in the nation.
- Swimming in 2025 is becoming a problem in fitting in our growing school for In-Term Swimming lessons. More on this later.
- The Kindy Farm Incursion was a huge success with student exposure to rich language being magnificent – the students learned about animals and their care but also absorbed mant words and phrases that they would not otherwise hear. Thanks to our wonderful teachers.
- Swimming is progressing well with many students opting out of the lessons for 2024 due to illness.
- RUOK Day on 12 September – please remember to acknowledge mental health issues in a positive and determined way that leads to better and active treatment. Wear BLUE on the day.
- Canning Vale College Transition Day (Yr 6) Visit to Caladenia.

Caladenia came 4th Place in the Overall Standings!
During STEM Week 2024, students from Year 1 to Year 6 were thrilled to participate in a special sustainability workshop hosted by Engineers Without Borders. The workshop challenged students to collaborate on designing and building a wind turbine within a set budget. This hands-on activity not only encouraged teamwork but also sparked creativity and innovative thinking among the students. They embraced the opportunity to think outside the box and thoroughly enjoyed the practical experience. The event highlighted the importance of sustainability and showcased the bright potential of our young engineers.
Year 2 Room – Miss Sheed
In Room 16 this term we have been learning about the Water Cycle in our Science program. Students have been demonstrating what they have learnt so far about the four stages; precipitation, collection, evaporation and condensation. This week we made a rain gauge to test the “collection” part of the cycle and measure how much rainfall we will receive in Canning Vale each day over the week (we think we might get lucky!) We can’t wait to analyse the results!
Year 4 Room 31 – Miss McKoy
This term the Year 4 cohort had an excursion to AQWA. The excursion linked in with our curriculum as we have been learning about ‘Waste in our Waterways’. Students engaged in an instructional talk from a staff member at AQWA, who discussed the different types of turtles, how we can help save sea animals and engaged in mini activities. After the learning session, we went and explored the Aquarium, seeing all the different sea animals and seeing if we could see ‘Captain’ the huge turtle down in the tunnel. Back in class, students created a persuasive writing piece on how and why we need to stop putting waste into our waterways.

Dear Parents and Carers,
Thank You
- Caladenia is a special place. I thank parents and students for their patience and supportive nature during this time of upheaval. I am so proud to be a member of the staff at this school – we try very hard to always have the best interests of students at heart and the students believe in us for that very fact. Our children are such great kids at school and their ability to be “kids” and join in all our school activities means that they are happy as well as successful. Thank you to every family in this beautiful school for allowing us to help grow your children. It is a pleasure and an honour.
- We also thank our staff for their dedication to our whole school plans for the improvement and well-being of all students.
- Ms Sanders (Deputy Principal) has been working into her new role with excellence and with a wonderfully inclusive and supportive nature. Well done.
- Thank you to the Music Dept at Caladenia for the enjoyment they give our children in immersing them in all genres of music, both instrumentally and chorally. The Ensembles are truly magical and performing together expertly. Thank you, Ms Connolly, Ms Rivett and Mr Frost…you are a fantastic team.
- Our fantastic staff has once again produced the best results for NAPLAN with ALL of our students doing the National Tests in Literacy and Numeracy. We have a sea of “Greens” (Well above National and Like-Schools) – we outperformed Western Suburbs schools and, for the second year running, outperformed most schools in WA. This means our children are excellent readers and writers as well as performing above expectations in all areas of Mathematics.
Well done students and staff.
The strategies we adopted and have reviewed and amended over the years are working very well – we will continue to pursue best practice in everything we do at Caladenia. We are a well-respected school in WA, helping other Public Schools in literacy improvement strategies. We are proud of our school and our students. I hope the community is equally as proud of what we achieve and how we do so.
Term 3
- Protective Behaviours – we have commenced professional learning for staff and students in children being aware of dangers and how to deal with them in and out of school.
- Our MAC enjoyed a Debate with Wattle Grove on 1 August and performed very well in the arguments on varying topics on the day. We were just beaten 3-2 over the five debates but the loss was admirable as our students (and Wattle Grove) gave some outstanding performances in research and content which was truly amazing and high calibre. Well done, MAC and Mr Kaempf.
- Swimming starts in a few weeks (3 September).
- 2025 Student Executive voting by students (years 3 – 5) has taken place and results will be available by Monday 19 August. We wish all the candidates the very best.
- We loved the Book Week Parade – parents outdid yourselves in creativity of favourite book costumes. Well done.
- Science and Technology Week has introduced “Engineers Without Borders” this week with a high degree of enthusiasm and interest. Well done, Ms Avery and Team for organizing Science and Technology Week to the school.
- School Development Day Monday 2 September (no school day for students) – this day has been approved by the School Board for professional development of staff in the area of learning strategies with a well-respected educationist from the Eastern States, Mr John Fleming. This is an honour to have him at our school as he rarely does so unless he is invested in what the school is achieving.
- Fathers’ Day – the P&C will be running stalls as normal and we thank them for their generosity. More on this later.

Remember, to drive anticlockwise around the school and slow down. Walking to school is a great way to create a safe environment for our children.
Education
Caladenia continues to learn from research and best practices in education. We are a constantly evolving school, looking for better ways to achieve growth in our social, emotional and academic areas of development. Our behaviour management model is based on building strong and sustainable relationships between teachers and students, teachers and teachers and teachers with parents. We will continue to explore and generate new strategies as our societal expectations change and ways of operating develop – we must continue to be relevant in a changing world while being mindful of cultures and values that are shared and expected of our children. We will continue working with you to develop these values and expectations of us as a school community.

During the July school holidays, the State Junior Chess Championships 2024, organized by the Chess Association of Western Australia, brought together talented young players from across the state. Senudi delivered an outstanding performance, successfully retaining her titles as the Under 10 Girls and Under 12 Girls Champion.
In addition to these accomplishments, Senudi was crowned the State Junior Girls Blitz Chess Champion for 2024 (Under 18), and Under 10 Blitz Chess Champion (Open), showcasing her versatility and proficiency in quick gameplay. Earlier in the year, at the State Junior Rapid Play Chess Championships 2024, Senudi demonstrated her remarkable skills by winning both the Under 12 (Open) and Under 12 (Girls) titles.
Alongside her success in chess, Senudi reached a significant milestone in music by being selected for the Emerging Talents Program 2024. From thousands of singers across participating schools in the One Big Voice 2024 concert, she was one of just 15 chosen for this esteemed program. The ETP serves as a pathway, offering promising Year 5 and 6 students an introduction to the Studio Choir Program and the essential skills and training needed for advancement.
Congratulations, Senudi, on your fantastic achievements this year!

Book Week 2024
It has been brilliant to see the magic of reading come alive during Book Week. Classes from Kindy to Year 6 took part in the Decorate a Door Competition to once again, show us their remarkable creative streak. On Wednesday morning all the students and staff did a gallery walk around the school to appreciate all the beautiful doors presented by each class. After much deliberation the winners were as follows.
Kindy to Year 2: Year 1 Room 21 Mrs Bartlett
Year 3 to Year 6: Year 4 Room 29 Mr Chandler
Whole School: Year 6 Room 39 Mr Griffiths and Mr Bailey
People’s Choice: Year 4 Room 34 Mrs Hardy
Students from Year One to Year Six took up their colouring pencils to design a poster to promote their favourite book or author. It was incredibly difficult to choose just one poster from each class as they were all spectacular. Well done to the following students: Alexis, Audrey, Elijah, Max, Mahi, Osindi, Ariana, Smithika, Shreya, Cherilyn, Fiona, Nathaniel, Daniela, Mayher, Serena, Avrielle, Garnoor, Safiyah, Kashika, Ayra, Aanya, Shanaya, Ethan, Aavin, Zoe, Karen, Yathri, Mahdia, Emily, Renee, Asher, Elizabeth and Nate.
The highlight of the week was Friday’s Book Parade where staff and students dressed up as their favourite book characters. It was pleasing to witness the excitement on everyone’s faces. Many familiar faces made an appearance including The Minions, Willy Wonka, and Alice and her friends from Wonderland. Even the Oxford Dictionary and the Titanic made its voyage to the parade! What a fabulous week! Huge congratulations to the English Committee for all their hard work and dedication to ensuring the week was an absolute success.

The Book Fair held in the library was once again a huge success, and we sincerely thank all families for their continued support. The grand total of sales was $8125.00. Your generosity through purchasing items at the fair has given us commission to the value of $1747.00. The school has selected to take that value in Scholastic Rewards Points to be put towards valuable resources. Thank you again to all families that supported this wonderful event.
If you placed an order for a book at the fair, it will be delivered directly to students in class within 2-3 weeks.

Kindy Room 43 – Miss Ellis
In Kindy this term we have been learning all about farmyards. We are enjoying reading a variety of books that include farm animals. We focused on “A squash and a Squeeze” for our decorate a door competition. We decorated a range of farm animals from the story using different collage materials. We have also enjoyed reading “The Little Red Hen” we got a little bit messy making our own Red Hen’s using paper plates, red paint and PVA glue. In small groups we used the wooden animals to act out the story, we all had a turn being the “The Little Red Hen”, it was so much fun!!
We have had a wonderful start to Term 3 in Kindy!Year 3 Room 35 – Mrs De Courcey
It has definitely been a busy time in Room 35!
The end of Term 2 took us to the past with a trip to Boola Bardip, the WA Museum in Perth City. We learnt the importance of classifying new specimens – both living and non-living by sorting and grouping characteristics when looking at facts, pictures and x-rays of both insects and items. While the evolution of video games was always going to be a hit, we couldn’t get over the size of the Blue Whale skeleton hanging above the old section of the museum. Then again, the smells of the past definitely left an impression – and turned some of our complexions a little green… This term has seen us examining what happens to our bodies, thoughts and feeling when experiencing a variety of emotions. The challenge to each other is to show what emotion our characters are feeling without SAYING the actual emotion…
Book week saw our creating side come out with a very hungry caterpillar tempted to devour some of the classroom and a few wizards practicing their spells. After all, we are a bunch of Smart Cookies with a lot of positive influences and people we trust that make us the amazing humans we are today.
This is topped off with trying to persuade the teacher that they should or shouldn’t be replaced by robots. Luckily there was a relieved look on our teachers face when we all agreed that teachers should be here to stay.
We can’t wait to see what the rest of the year brings!

Dear Parents/Care Givers,
Thank You
Our wonderful staff recently hosted 100 Intern Teachers and Principals of WA Public Schools showcasing our strategies in teaching English across the school. The visiting teachers and Principals were amazed at the level of sophistication of teaching and learning, calmness and beautiful behaviours of our students. There were 20 schools represented in all on Wednesday and Thursday of last week and 4 of these schools are our Intern Schools who we will work with to improve their teaching over the next twelve months. We are very proud of our teacher-Mentors at Caladenia and I thank them for sharing and preparing professional learning and classroom observations for Interns. This program was established by the Dept of Education and we were selected as a Centre School for Excellence to carry out this training of Public School in WA. Well done, Caladenia.
Reflection
“We are committed to the values which protect the dignity of each person and fosters respect and integrity for every member of our community. We treat everyone with love, care and concern. Our relationships are based on trust, honesty, mutual respect and acceptance of personal responsibilities.” (from School Board Statement of Community Expectations 2024).

Thankfulness
We are often wishing for better things to happen in our lives or hoping to get things – children are no different. However, we seldom take time to be thankful for the things we already have in our lives, both in terms of possessions and people. We are trying to have our children learn about THANKFULNESS and what this really means in our lives – our family, our teachers, our friends, toys, cars, house, everything. We really do have a lot to be thankful for/about. When you have the time, talk about thankfulness with your children – get them to appreciate and enjoy these things every day. Thank you.
Traffic Flow
Most families are now aware of the dangers of breaking rules when driving around our school – a seriously dangerous accident can be avoided if we are super-careful of our children crossing roads and walking/riding close to road verges. Thank you for your continued awareness of our children around the school. Remember, to drive anticlockwise around the school and slow down. Walking to school is a great way to create a safe environment for our children.
Education
We are researching all the time and recently we have been looking at better ways to teach Mathematics and Reading – we are constantly looking at improved ways of mentoring our own graduate/new teachers so that our unique Caladenia Way is understood and applied by all staff. With over 100 staff members and over 980 students, it is a challenge to keep ahead of the game as we have done for many years at Caladenia – but keep ahead we do, and I am very proud of our staff who each day give their best in teaching and the work they do for children.

Year 1 Room 21 – Mrs Bartlett
Room 21 has explored the vast blue ocean and the animals that call it home. We have studied a range of fiction and non-fiction texts to learn about turtles, whales, seahorses, and the amazing sea life within the Great Barrier Reef. We learned that male seahorses carry their eggs in a pouch and compared Baleen and Toothed Whales. We joined Tilly the Green Turtle on her perilous quest, journeying from her nest to the Great Barrier Reef. Students created interesting writing pieces, artwork, and Venn diagrams to demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of life under water.
Year 5 Room 26 – Mr Lam
The Year 5 students in Room 26 have been excited as we master the art of ‘Show, Don’t Tell’ in our writing. This technique has opened up a world of creativity and expression, allowing us to craft more vivid and engaging pieces. From persuasive essays to narrative stories, we are learning to paint pictures with our words, making our writing come alive.
One of the highlights has been using the ‘Pebble, Rock, Boulder’ strategy in narrative writing. This method helps us build our stories from small, simple and captivating beginnings (the pebble) to more complex and detailed scenes (the rock and boulder). We have also delved into informative writing, exploring different natural disasters and sharing fascinating facts in a way that grabs the reader’s attention. Additionally, we dabbled in poetry, experimenting with different styles to express our thoughts and emotions vividly.
As book week approaches, Room 26 is busy preparing insightful book reviews. We are eager to share our opinions and recommendations, showcasing our growing ability to analyse and critique literature. With such dedication and passion for writing, it’s clear that Room 26 is ready to impress!

Dear Parents/Care Givers,
Thank You
A very big thank you to our School Board parents for their sole development of the Statement of Community Expectations for Caladenia Primary School. The parents on the Board represent the community and do not act in association with individual, group or organizational perspectives. As members of the Board the parents seek the opinions of community members from all cultural entities in our community. This Statement was developed from a deep understanding of the intent of the school’s care and concern for its children and their continued well-being. Caladenia continues, as it has for 17 years, to provide its students and community members with a school of high integrity and first class academic and social/emotional development of its students.
The Statement is a very positive attitude towards maintaining a highly collaborative community of people who care for and nurture the school’s environment for our healthy and mindful children. Thank you, parents of the School Board.
Thanks
The school staff thank all parents for their continued and respectful contacts with them. We all try very hard to get things right and we welcome all parents to come in to talk – we will continue to provide an open mind and a respectful and dignified approach to parents who do so. Thank you to the many parents who have taken the time to see us about their concerns and to the very large majority of parents who support the school for what it is trying to achieve for the benefit of your children.

Golf Championships
On the 17th of June 2024, Zachary Year 6, Sean Year 5 and Yongwen year 5, competed in the Primary Interschool Golf Championship at Melville Glades Golf Club. This is their 2nd year competing in the Interschool tournament after they had placed 2nd in 2023 in their first time competing. The boys arrived early at 7am on a cold, dewey morning and competed in the 9-hole Stableford division of the tournament teeing off at 8am on the back 9 holes.
Stableford competitions are for golfers with a handicap and are a point based system of scoring based on what they get on each hole. In the Modified division, players play off a shorter course and this is a stroke based event for players without an official golf handicap. Over 90 primary school golfers from schools all across WA took part in both divisions. Caladenia Primary School had Zach and Sean competing in the Stableford division and Yongwen in the Modified division and all gave their 110% effort in the competition. They have trained hard and all three of them were extremely proud to have represented Caladenia Primary School. After a tough 9 holes, Zach and Sean managed to come in overall 2nd place in the Stableford division with a combined score of 32 points. Congratulations on your achievement boys!At Caladenia, we love showcasing our students’ sporting achievements and events, as well as any other interests that they would like to share with our Caladenia Community. Interschool Carnival
We had a fantastic Winter Sport Carnival at Caladenia Primary School this year, with enthusiastic participation from our students across AFL, Netball, Soccer, and league tag. The sun shone brightly, at Burrendah Park and Langford Netball Stadium, adding to the excitement as our young athletes showcased their skills and sportsmanship. A big thank you to all the teachers, parents, and helpers who supported the event, ensuring everything ran smoothly and encouraging our students throughout the day. It was wonderful to see our school community come together in such a positive and energetic way.
Here’s to another successful Winter Sport Carnival at Caladenia Primary School! Please see images from the day and the final standings from each sport. Unfortunately, the League Tag scores were not digitally recorded.
Cross Country Winners
On Monday, 24th June students from years one to 6 participated in the faction cross country. It was a fantastic day with beautiful weather and some great displays long distance running. Congratulations to green faction who came out on top as winners. Well done to all the award winners and for all the students who put in a solid effort. A huge thank you to the Parents, students, and staff for your cooperation and assistance to make the day successful one.

Year 5 Poetry Slam
Selected students in Year 5 competed in our annual Poetry Slam this week. Five students from each class performed a poem they had written during our recent Poetry Writing unit. Mr Nastasi and Mr McIlwraith were tasked with the very difficult job of judging the competition, with Room 38’s Kailee being chosen as the overall winner. Congratulations to all finalists for their fantastic poetry writing and performances.

Pre-Primary Room 5 – Mrs Patton
This term in Design and Technologies, Pre-Primary students have been learning about various food and natural fibre products and where they originated from. Students explored the farm process and production of milk, eggs, wool, and bread. They got to learn some interesting facts along the way! Did you know that a cow’s stomach is split into four parts? This helps them to digest their food more easily.
Students got to discuss and sequence the different production processes and made some lovely craft along the way. Have a look at some of the amazing work that the students produced!
Year 4 Room 34 – Mrs Hardy
This term in Room 34, the students have been busy looking into Famous Explorers of the 1400s-1700s. From this research, students were tasked with completing an at-home project that included an oral report and a poster on their famous explorer. In class, we wrote information reports about our explorers – we even did some coffee staining to give the reports authenticity! Students had a great time using their creativity to decorate and display their posters. They also did an amazing job at presenting in front of their peers.
Look at some of the awesome work the Year 4 students did!
MAC Technology Showcase
On Monday 17th and Tuesday 18th June, MAC invited the Year 6 classes to the assembly area to demonstrate the potential of some the different technologies that have been acquired at Caladenia Primary School.
Below Right: MAC conducted a survey and split into six stations that had all researched a type of technology. These included Spheros, Snap-on Kits, Edison Robots, EV3’s, Strawbees and Makey Makeys.
During the showcase, Year 6 classes rotated to each station for twenty minutes and were taught about the potentials of the technologies and how they can be used in the classroom
Left: Students were enthusiastic to teach and learn and there was a sense of excitement at seeing what our technology can do. A great effort to everyone involved.
Library News
In the library for Semester 1, the Year 2 classes have been looking at comparing characters from books they have read. One of our favourite characters is from the picture book, ‘Dirty Bertie’ by David Roberts. Bertie is a young boy who enjoys the dirt, worms and of course picking his nose. His family tries to tell Bertie how gross this is, but Bertie doesn’t understand. With the Year 2’s we talked about the character traits of Dirty Bertie and the sort of person he is. They really enjoyed the story, which then leads to a book series (Dirty Bertie) aimed at the Year 2 age group. Borrowing of this series has taken off, as the students really loved how Bertie loves the dirty things in life!

Affirmation ∼ “Be faithful to that which exists within yourself.” – André Gide
Dear Parents/Care Givers,
Thank You
It is really wonderful to see and feel the support from our community over the past few days. We really do the best for your children both socially/emotionally and academically. We protect them from harm while at school and insist on the best care for them by a zero policy on bullying and other forms of possible harm. We also provide the children with the best understanding of how to remain resilient through issues and problems – this takes time and a great deal of effort on the part of all of us at Team Caladenia. Thank you for supporting your children to understand that consequences are not hurtful, but we learn from them for the future. Thanks for being that parent who understands what we are trying to do at Caladenia is proactive and helpful for healthy growth of every individual in our school.
After School
Caladenia has an After School Care facility on site to cater for families who cannot be here to pick up children after school on time. The number of students waiting in the front office after school is preventing families from quality service by our expert staff. We have duty of care for students and we would be very concerned if one of these children inadvertently went missing. This can be a dangerous practice if children decide to walk home without telling us they are leaving the office.
Reflection
A culture of high care, high standards and high performance is underpinned by respectful and professional relationships whereby students and staff are provided with ongoing quality opportunities to develop the skills, knowledge and confidence to achieve their potential. (Public School Independent Review of Caladenia 2023).
Reconciliation Week
Thank you to our wonderful teachers for their great work in making reconciliation effective at Caladenia by showing our students that our First Nations people are loved and cared for as we all are here. Thank you.

· Tonight is P&C DISCO Night. It promises to be a wonderful event for the Year 1-6 children. Have a great time everyone.
· Please refer to the Term Planner for events coming up, but the following ones are imminent – Interschool Winter Carnival on 14 June, Yr 3 Museum Excursions on 17, 19 and 20 June, MAC Excursion on 19 June, School Cross Country on Monday 20 June

Year 3 Room 9 – Miss Goncalves
We have been having a fantastic time learning in Room 9. This week, we learnt all about how we use Collective Nouns to represent a group of people, animals, or things. We explored some common and unusual Collective Nouns and even had a competition to see who could name the most. Our favourite Collective Nouns were an embarrassment of pandas, a grumble of pugs and a cloud of grasshoppers.
Year 6 Room 37 – Mrs Weissflog
Room 37 students have completed a unit of work on the processes involved in rice production, from the farm to the plate. The challenge was to design a rice transporter that needed to have a wheel and axle to transport ½ cup of rice over 1 Metre by either pushing or pulling. Students were expected to use recycled materials. Students shared thoughts with each other as they created their transporters. The design and plan process proved much easier than the create and test process. Some of the simplest designs work more efficiently and we all realized the importance of plan, design, test, reflect and then try again to improve our designs. Proving that designing and inventing is very rarely accurate the first try. There are many blossoming engineers and inventors in Rm 37!

Getting to Know our School Board Members
This week Chao Sun and Cindy Booth have reflected on their years of experience as a member of the Caladenia School Board.
Chao Sun
As I continue my role on the school board in 2024, I remain deeply passionate about providing our children with an exceptional education. Over the past 9 years, I’ve gained valuable insights into the education system, including the immense challenges of upholding the high standards of our school and the dedication required to be an effective educator. I have seen firsthand the unwavering commitment of our school staff in the face of these challenges.
I am grateful for the tireless efforts of Mr. Nastasi and the entire Caladenia team in creating a nurturing environment where our children can thrive. It is through our collective involvement as parents and community members that we can ensure the continued success of our wonderful school.
Together, let us build a strong foundation for our children’s future, supporting them with a caring and engaged community. I am honoured to serve on the board and look forward to working with you all in this shared mission.
Chao Sun – Parent Representative
Cindy Booth
My Name is Cindy Booth, I have been a member of the School Board since the School began in 2007. When my eldest child was in pre-primary and is now studying at university to be a primary school teacher. I have also volunteered with the P&C over many years.
I have found working with the School board and the wonderful staff at Caladenia over the years to be very rewarding. The support we give to the Staff and Children of Caladenia makes it easier for the teachers to keep giving outstanding and excellent education and care to everyone in the school.
I highly recommend that you give everyone who works and volunteers at Caladenia your full support, because for me the Caladenia community is an extension of my family and I love all of you.
When the opportunity arises to join the School Board, please don’t hesitate, as I said it’s very rewarding.

Dear Parents/Care Givers,
Thanks
The P&C are our highly-valued partners in achieving the best for our children of Caladenia. Today is P&C Day and to honour the work they do for our school, we have developed a special celebration of what they mean to us through a display at the front of the Staff Room. Thank you to all the students and staff in helping us recognize the P&C’s massive contribution to our community, both in developing a strong bond between community and the school and for the funds raised to support structures such as the playground and resources/equipment in the school. Thank you, Michelle and your Team for the wonderful effort and outcomes of the P&C work in the school.
Confidence
Caladenia continues to provide the best care and safety for all students at school and with the highest quality and standards. Please feel free to contact us if you wish to talk about issues or what we do well. We are always here for you.
Traffic Flow and Parking
Thank you for all the wonderful Caladenia people who are walking to school at present. It does lessen the pressures on the road traffic and parking issues we have around the school. Let us not be complacent about safety, though – we should be extremely wary and watchful for children crossing roads or riding bikes or other transport. Thank you, everyone.
Caladenia Reflection
“Genuine care for the success and wellbeing of students is palpable. Staff contribute positively to a school culture of growth and respectful relationships, where professional, supportive and transparent structures empower them to discuss their views in an informative and collaborative way for the benefit of all students.” (Public School Review 2023) This statement is from the Public-School Review Report 2023 from a panel of experts from the Dept of Education in relation to Caladenia’s educational effectiveness status. This excerpt from the Report is a clear indication of our success criteria in looking after the full range of needs of our students. Our high care/high quality mantra is earned and clear to education professionals. We are very proud of our achievements we have formed together and the type of school we have grown together in Canning Vale.
Our School
· Reconciliation Week is in Week 7 of this term (starting 27 May). It is an appropriate time to give support and thanks to our First Nation People as the rightful owners of this land and to try to reconcile our differences of the past to be great citizens together with them, living in harmony and goodwill. The theme for the week is “Voice for Generations”.
· WA Day is a special day for us all. Our great State is made up of great people who have carved out a tremendous place to live and raise our children. We are grateful to our leaders, both First Nation and State Leaders, for their foresight. Thank you.
· As an official Dept of Education WA Centre School for Excellence, we have our next four Intern Schools for 2024-2025. These schools will be assisted by our Principal and teachers to develop Intern Schools planning and teaching quality over the course of the next twelve months. We are excited to start our second round of assistance of Interns next month.
· Winter Carnival against other schools is on 14 June – come and support Caladenia.
· Our internal Cross Country Carnival is on 24 June at Caladenia. Please come along – love to see you.
Have a great weekend.

It was a great pleasure for the school to host the EALD Parent Morning Tea for 2024 recently. It was also an opportunity to introduce our new EALD teacher, Mrs Catherine Sein, who has been teaching EALD since last year.
Parents were given insight into the EALD program: how students are identified for inclusion in the program, how teachers teach and activities for language learning. The difference between social language and academic language was brought up, as was the importance of giving children from EALD backgrounds time and patience to master English while still maintaining their home language.
A short video was screened showing how to read and enjoy a book with young EALD learners in both the home language and in English, and it was a good model for what parents can do at home to enhance the learning of language. The importance of providing a wide range of experiences and activities for children outside of school was also emphasised because this enlarges children’s vocabulary and helps them understand the world around them better. This in turn improves their reading, writing, listening and speaking skills.
Staff from Faith Community Services presented the range of services that they offer to migrant and EALD families, some of which include exercise classes, cooking classes, tutoring services and English classes for both children and adults.

I wish to say thank you to the parents who attended the morning tea. We appreciate your partnership in the education of your children.

National Simultaneous Storytime
National Simultaneous Storytime is an annual event aimed at promoting the value of reading and literacy. All students read this year’s book, Bowerbird Blues by Aura Parker, with their class this week. We had a fantastic time doing many different activities about this book, including information reports and imaginative writing. We learnt about the importance of friendship, values, and sentimental items. Mrs Crofts created a lovely display in the library, allowing the students to bond over their mutual understanding of Bowerbird Blues.

Shiver Me Timbers!
What have PP5 Room 2 been up to?
Aarrgh! Last week we went sailing the seven seas with “Pirate Polly”. We thoroughly enjoyed reading this big book by Jill Eggelton, with its rich language, humour and lively, rhythmical, rhyming text. It prompted lots of discussion in our shared reading sessions and inspired us to have a go writing our own text, “If I were a pirate…”. We then illustrated the text with a guided drawing of a pirate. Don’t they look awesome!
MAC – Room 19 – Mr Kaempf
On Tuesday 14th May, MAC visited Curtin University to learn more about the origins of the universe and how energy and matter interact at the most fundamental level. The excursion included a visit to Professor Igor Bray, a world leader in atomic collision theory.Professor Bray developed the Convergent Close-Coupling Theory. It relates to the most fundamental collision systems involving electrons, photons, hydrogen and helium.
MAC has been investigating how the coupling theory applies to the operations of the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) currently being constructed in France. At 23,000 tonnes it is the largest fusion machine ever developed and will be finished in late 2025. It will create fusion energy at a temperature of 150 million degree Celsius, using the same principals as the Sun and the stars.
The ITER Project – 24m x 30m.
If you look closely at the bottom of the picture, you can see the size of a person.
MAC also learnt about how the Discrete Fracture Network Model is used to examine meteorites. Students were allowed to hold a piece of Mars and discovered it was covered in water three billion years ago. They saw evidence there is still ice beneath the surface of Mars.

MAC students also visited the Space, Science & Technology Centre and learnt about the BINAR space program. They build small, cube shaped spacecraft in WA that are then launched into space. In collaboration with different space agencies including NASA, ESA and JAXA, BINAR have launched a number of successful space missions with the goal of exploring the solar system.
Rovers of the surface of Mars are challenged by steep slopes, rocks and sand. Curtin STEM Outreach organised an interesting coding competition where students were required to build and program a robot to clear obstacles.
A big thank you to Curtin staff and volunteers for providing these amazing learning opportunities!
