From the Principal’s Desk
Dear Parents/Care Givers
Public School Review
We have done it again. Last week, our school was Reviewed by the Dept of Education Directors and we were given the highest accolades for our school possible. Firstly, we have been awarded Highly Effective School and secondly, the comments made by the Director of Public School Reviews, Mr Rod Lowther, were extraordinary – “real, honest, transparent and highly competent administration and staff at Caladenia”. Many of this comments related to the excellence in the quality of staff and the expertise and effectiveness of the administration team. We are very proud of our Review and we are taking on board a few comments made by parents in the 2018 Survey.
I wish to publicly thank our fantastic staff for their knowledge, skills and implementation of our whole school improvement plans which we review each and every year.
My vision of a school which would work hard for each and every student to be the best they could be and to develop a culture of trust, honesty and respect for everyone within our community, is being met by all staff and parents – this is an extraordinary achievement and one that I am grateful to staff and students for – it takes enormous trust and belief to transparently follow a plan for success – I am so proud of our staff and students and believe that our parent body is on-board with our directions and standards for all children in our care.
Thank you – what a great way to end the year.
I wish all staff and community members how have helped in 2019 – P&C, School Board, individuals – a wonderful Christmas and New Year – thanks for all the efforts you have made to be awarded School of the Year – this is going to be a great feeling throughout 2020.
Friday 13 December is our Graduation Evening for Year Six Students. My sincere thanks to Mr Smyth for his extraordinary preparation and implementation of the Ceremony for our Graduates.
I thank the 2020 Student Executive also for running the Graduation Ceremony and helping the Graduates enjoy their night.
We are proud of the way our seniors have progressed their emotional, social and academic development over the course of the years at Caladenia. We wish all graduates a fantastic night and hope that their memories of Caladenia never fade and that all the wonderful values and skills they have learned while at Caladenia are taken with them to use forever.
To all families that are leaving us for whatever reasons at the end of this year, we wish you the greatest happiness and joy for the future. We have loved having you with us during your time here and hope you too have enjoyed the experience.
Thought for the Year The best of all gifts around any Christmas tree: the presence of a happy family all wrapped up in each other.
Happy holidays and please come back safe and well in 2020.

Our very own Jasmine represented WA in the School Sport Australia cricket tournament this November. The tournament was held in Adelaide with the tour running from November 16th to 24th involving games against SA, NSW, QLD, VIC and the ACT. Jasmine is a leg spinner and middle order batter. She has been training since August for the tournament. It was recommended that she try out for the team by her cricket coach and she is one of the youngest players selected. Jasmine says ‘I was thrilled and excited about the the experience, and proud to represent WA’. Well done Jasmine. We are very proud of you.
Is your child going to represent the state at a national competition? Let us know.
Interschool Athletics Carnival
After all the fun of the faction athletics carnival in Week 1, we quickly started preparing for the interschool carnival just a few weeks afterwards in Week 4. This year we were extra prepared with training sessions taking place every day in the lead up to the main event.
Just like our faction carnival, the Interschool Carnival began with a jumps and throws day on the Tuesday and all of our successful students from our own jumps and throws day competed. A relaxed atmosphere prevailed and students gave 100% resulting in plenty of ribbons being distributed to Caladenia.
The main event was on Friday which had 80 of our best athletes fired up to take on four other schools at Ranford oval. The day started with 200s followed by sprints and Caladenia was a regular feature on the podium.
We then turned our attention to team games where the hard work of training was paying off with some impressive performances competing against some tough teams. Lastly, the pole relays were very well done by Caladenia with smooth running change overs giving us a lot of first and second place finished. In the end, we managed a solid third place finish which was a great result for our budding athletes. We featured a lot in the individual honours to with Charles Y3 Boys Champion, Logan Y4 Boys Champion, Sharni Y5 Girls Runner Up Champion and Koby Y6 Boys Champion. Well done to all who competed!

Year 2 Room 22
This term, the Year 2 students have been busy writing persuasive letters to their favourite crayon. It all began when they read a book called ‘The Day the Crayons Quit’ by Drew Daywalt. They then took on the perspective of Duncan and wrote letters to their favourite crayon, convincing them of why they should not quit. The students did an amazing job at using persuasive devices, emotive language and high modality words to support their argument.
Pre Primary Room 1
What an amazing year we have had in Room One! We have made great friends and learnt many new and interesting things. We have been working so hard learning how to read, write and count and we are ready for Year One. Now onto our next big adventure!
Year 2 Room 33
In Year 2 Room 33, we have been learning all sorts of things about 2D and 3D shapes. We have loved learning about the features of these shapes and their properties. We created Tangram puzzle pictures by flipping, turning and sliding various shapes to fit into the outline. Look at some of our amazing Tangram art works!
Year 1 Room 32
The Year 1 Students in Room 32 have been learning about different Australian habitats in Science. To support their understanding of different habitats and the animals that live within those habitats, the students went on an excursion to the Perth Zoo. After the excursion, the students researched and published a report on an Australian animal of their choice. The report needed to include details about the animal’s habitat, distribution and food, along with an illustration of the animal.
This report provided the foundation for students to design and create a diorama of the animal’s habitat. The design incorporated a plan of what features and other animals the students would find in their chosen habitat. The students also needed to plan the materials required to construct their diorama.
For a fantastic, craft session the students’ applied their knowledge of habitats to produce amazing dioramas. Working off their plan, using their imagination and pushing their creativity, the class created a range of shoebox dioramas that reflected the wide range of Australian habitats, from deserts to oceans.

School Banking Volunteers
We are still looking for more helpers for School Banking on Friday mornings between 8am-8:30am. As two of our existing volunteers will be moving on next year, extra volunteers are desperately to replace them. Volunteers would work with existing experienced volunteers. Even if you can only help a couple of days per term, it makes a real difference. If you’re interested, please contact the P&C.
We welcome all members of our community to volunteer with the P&C during 2020. Please email firstname.lastname@example.org for further information or attend our AGM.
Book list Amendment
The 2020 Ziggies Book list asks parents to supply a hand towel, this is not needed for years 1-6. It applies to students in Kindy and Pre Primary only.
We apologise for any inconvenience.
